Tony L. Dominguez was born December 10, 1938 in his parent’s home in Rockport, Texas. He was the youngest of Jesus and Mauricia’s seven children. He went to elementary in Rockport when it was still segregated. His formal education ended in the sixth grade. He never stopped being angry about segregation.
Tony served in the United States Army. His brothers also served our nation.
Tony married Alicia Trevino Dominguez on April 27, 1964. She was at his side when he passed just days after their 58 th anniversary. He is survived by his children, Dominic Jesus Dominguez (Laura Hutt Dominguez), Dahlia Audelia Dominguez, Daphny Leah Dominguez Ainslie (Ricardo Ainslie), and Dante Eli Dominguez (Erica Paige Matlock); Grandchildren: Andrea Jean McDonald, Jacob Hamilton Dominguez, Joshua Henry Dominguez, Jorge Alejandro Ainslie, Joaquin Mauricio Ainslie; Great-grandchildren: Tatiana Marie Jaggard, Thomas Eli Jaggard, Alaia Delacruz. Sophia Buenano Dominguez is also a member of the family. He is preceded in death by his Granddaughter, Danica Alicia Dominguez as well as his parents and siblings. He raised his kids in the home he built on Pearl Street (6 bed, 1 bath; it was originally on stilts, then Daphny showed up and he put walls around the bottom floor).
He was a restaurant owner and caterer. Thousands of enchiladas were served and caterings were had. He once hosted Senator Phil Gramm in that restaurant on the corner of Pearl and Linden.
The Dominguez family roots run deep in Rockport. Tony’s Great-grandfather, Antonio Dominguez can be found on the United States Census for the year 1860 in Cameron County, Texas. The same Antonio and his son, Sylvestri Dominguez, can be found on the United States Census for the year 1900 in Aransas County, Rockport, Texas. Generations of Dominguezes have lived, fished, and raised families here. Tony and his brother, Hillis, both served on the Navigation district, representing Precinct 2 for a combined total of 40 years. Tony took pride in serving his hometown, and led efforts in beach restoration, rebuilding after Harvey, Harbor Renovation, and other projects in the community. Tony was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was always active in his faith community. He was also very proud of being the In-School Suspension supervisor for a number of years at Rockport-Fulton High School. He coached little league for his children’s’ teams.
