Stanford Halley Armstrong, 82, passed away at home in Rockport, Texas on May 31, 2024. He was born on October 20, 1941, in San Antonio. Texas. His parents were Frances Nelle Halley and Halsell Pace Armstrong who preceded him in death. His sister, Christie Claire Shipman of Ohio also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betsy Drinkwater Armstrong. He is survived by his first wife of 17 years, Gloria Hluchanek Armstrong of Dallas, Texas, mother of their children, Mitchell James Armstrong of Austin, Texas, along with their daughter Carrie Elizabeth Armstrong Marquis (Jay) and granddaughters Mackenzie and Abigail all of Dallas, Texas. Additionally, he is survived by various cousins, nieces and nephews.
His life started in Hebbronville, Texas where his father was a rancher. When he was 5 years of age the family moved to Georgetown, Texas, where he graduated from high school and was recently inducted into the Hall of Honor. He attended college at Southwestern University in Georgetown, the University of Texas in Austin, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southwest Texas State in San Marcos.
Stan always followed the principle that if you are going to live in a community, you should give back to that community. He was proud of all the things he accomplished everywhere he lived. Those included: Farmers Branch Planning and Zoning Commission, United Way Budget Committees, Governors State Manpower Advisory Committee, City of Dallas Youth Advisory Committee, Dallas County Mental Health Association, D/FW Airport Assistance Center Board of Directors, Youth Manpower Planning Council for Dallas County, School Board member of Christ the King Catholic School, and Founding member of the Rockport Cultural Arts District. One of his proudest involvements was being appointed by a Federal Judge to help oversee the desegregation of the Dallas Public Schools.
Stan was friendly, kind, giving, patient, and smart with great common sense and instincts. He kept in touch with all and truly cared about all people. He will be missed by many.
The celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23rd at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home, 814 E Main, Rockport, Texas, wearing Hawaiian or fishing shirts, and for the ladies wear bright party clothes. Following that celebration, the party will move to the Rockport Country Club for a big send-off from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
