Sherman King

October 4, 1939 — May 9, 2023

Aransas Pass

Sherman Dean King went home to heaven on May 9, 2023 at age 83. He was born in Wharton, Texas and graduated from W. B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi. He later joined the United States Army. He married Jenny Adela Karel in 1964. As a young man, Sherman enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing softball, and hunting, fishing and boating. After enlisted service in the Army, he worked for the military as a civilian in electronics. Sherman and Jenny later opened an appliance repair company. The couple then moved to east Texas and operated a small cattle ranch together on 104 acres. After over 30 years of ranching, Sherman and Jenny moved to the Aransas Pass area where Sherman pursued his passion for fishing and boating. In partnership with Jenny, Sherman started a business renovating and selling/renting houses. Sherman was active in the Aransas Pass Lions Club, serving in official and unofficial leadership positions. Through the Lions Club, he helped raise money for a machine to give eye tests to area children and helped with the testing. He also helped many indigent families get roofs replaced after Hurricane Harvey, and helped with renovations to ramps, cabanas, water fountains and fish cleaning stations at the Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass, Texas. Sherman was a mentor to many of his younger friends. Sherman was also a member of the Moose Lodge. He was known to be able to fix anything and was called upon often by family and friends for instructions and advice. Besides fishing and hunting, Sherman’s other favorite pastime was playing poker with his friends, which he did a couple times a week. Throughout his life, Sherman loved taking his family camping, boating, water skiing and other outdoor activities. He also loved to garden and grow his own vegetables. He was known to have the tallest okra plants in the neighborhood, the fruits of which he shared with everyone. Sherman was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul and Ethel Ora King, his brother Malcolm K. King and his sister-in-law Gerda Cardwell. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jenny Adela King, his children, Deanie King (Mary), Shelley King-D’Souza (Val) and Paul King, his granddaughters, Kristina King (Steve) and Victoria D’Souza, sister-in-law Ginger Pope Garcia (Adolio), brother-in-law Sonny Cardwell, nieces Jessica Gans (Clint) and Charmaine Lakins, nephews Jeff Grady (Gina) and Robert Close (Deanna) and many cousins and other relatives.
