Ruth Edna (Johnson) Thompson

December 1, 1937 — September 13, 2024

Ruth Edna (Johnson) Thompson (86) passed peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, in Owens Cross Roads, AL. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend who never met a dog she didn't like or turned down an opportunity for adventure! Known for her bright smile and fun sense of humor, Ruth made the world a brighter place wherever she went – and she LOVED to go! Over the years she traveled to the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and many continental states. Ruth strived for excellence in everything she did. Creative, funny, insatiably curious, remarkably independent, yet somehow managed to be a biblically submissive wife. She met the love of her life, Bob Thompson, when she was 16 and married him 21 days after her 18th birthday – or, as she would say, "as soon as I could!" Her only pride was in her children, James and Donna. Being a wife, mother, and grandmother was her greatest joy. She worked hard to support her children in all of their endeavors while teaching them to develop deep faith, good character, and universal kindness.

In 1987, after volunteering with Tri-County EMS as an EMT for many years, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Del Mar College alongside her daughter. She worked as a neonatal ICU nurse at Driscoll Children's Hospital before becoming the Ingleside clinic's San Patricio County Health Nurse. After her retirement, she continued to serve others by participating in church events and devotedly caring for her family and friends. She relocated to Huntsville, AL, in 2017. Her loving, fun, engaging personality endeared her to everyone she met. In a very short time, despite the shutdowns of the pandemic, she was surrounded by friends of all ages who adored her. This fondness was clearly demonstrated by frequent visitors even as her health declined and she experienced the transition to her heavenly home. If you were fortunate enough to know Ruth Thompson, your life was blessed and undoubtedly changed for the better. She was surely greeted with, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Go rest high on that mountain, Mom!

Ruth is survived by her children and their spouses, James & Nancy Thompson of Corpus Christi, TX, and LTC (Ret.) Richard & Donna Williams of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren Travis & Nichol Thompson, Cody Thompson & his family, Joel & Anessa Soto of Pflugerville, TX, CWO3 Anthony & Brittany Casey of Ewa Beach, HI, and SPC (Ret.) Nicholas & Sabrina Davis of Huntsville, AL; great-grandchildren Anabelle and Meadow Soto, and her "extra daughter" and travel buddy Carmen Edwards of Huntsville, AL. She is preceded in death by her cherished husband, Robert "Bob" Thompson, her father and mother, Jack J. & Martha "Skeeter" Johnson, and her sister Linda White.
