Hart High School in Newhall, California he chose to enlist in the United States Army where he attained the rank of Platoon Sgt and was a Paratrooper for the 173rd Airborne Brigade serving three tours in Vietnam. After his discharge from the Army of 9 years, he became a National Guard Recruiter and then decided to enlist in the United States Navy where he was honorably discharged in 1974 after one year of service for the reason of physical disability. In his later years, he received a hat that represented the 173rd Airborne Brigade and wore it proudly until the day he died. He spent the majority of his time after the military working for California Institute of the Arts in Newhall, California as the Facilities Director where he retired. After retirement he moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico to be closer to his children. While in Ruidoso he met and married the love of his life and soul mate Juanita “Lorraine” Avina whom he married on January 12, 2007, and gained three more daughters. Mr. Roden had the gift to fix anything. He loved working with his hands and fixing and repairing things and doing woodworking projects. He was a man of many hats from owning several businesses including a BBQ restaurant, a construction company and even a secondhand furniture store. He accomplished a lot but his main accomplishment and what he was proudest of was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was always making his family laugh and being the life of every party. He was a man that stood for what he believed in and fought for what was right.
