Patricia Jean Baugh, 94, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister was peacefully called to her eternal resting place on December 11, 2021. She was born October 22, 1927 in Tulsa, OK to Merril and Blanche Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents Merril and Blanche, first husband John Edward Smith, second husband Ruffner Perry Baugh, grandson Shawn Alan Sutton, brother-in-law Dennis Dean Curry and son in law Ronald Leon Sutton. She was a Presbyterian and member of First Presbyterian Church in Rockport. She completed her bachelor's degree in education at the University of Houston and taught elementary school science.
Our Pat was one of a kind and we loved her dearly for it. When they were children, she sometimes put Darrell and Diane in a car and drive toward hurricanes so they could see and feel the awesome forces of nature. Later, she would travel all over the USA with Ruff in an RV, stopping often to experience natural beauty. She and Ruff became Rockhounds and traveled the world in search of adventure. Always physically active, she played tennis well into her eighties. She spent many wonderful days with her grandchildren and then great-grands, sharing her love for the natural world, rocks, science and art. She often regaled us all with stories of running barefoot in Green's Bayou where she was a self-proclaimed tomboy.
Pat was an avid gardener and a Life Member of the Texas Master Gardeners in Aransas County. She was instrumental in the development of the children's garden at the Downtown Rockport Demonstration Garden. She was a founding member of the Rockport Herb and Rose Study Group. Pat was active in her community, volunteering with the Aransas County Services Inc. woman's committee known as the "Little old ladies in tennis shoes," and Castaways.
She is survived by her son Darrell Wayne Smith (Gayle) of Melbourne Florida, daughter Lynda Diane Sutton (Ron) of Lake Buchanan Texas, stepson Philip Dupont Baugh (Mimi) of Rockport Texas , grandchildren Whitney Ruth Halperin (Corin), Eric Lee Sutton (Tina), Emily Gayle Smith, Stacy Adam Sutton (Kaylei), Kristin Alanna Carona, Nicholas Jordan Baugh (Megan) and great-grandchildren Katelyn Sutton (Gino), Micheal Sutton, Gavin Sutton, Sabina Halperin, Vivian Haplerin, Braden Wilson, Matilda Wilson, Maxwell Carona and great-great-grandson Jackson Perez, her brother Kay Terry Johnson (Nancy), sister Rosemary Johnson Curry (Dennis) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and her constant companion her cherished cat Patti.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Gulf Point Village staff who provided thoughtful and gracious care and were thought of as family by her. We also appreciate the assistance of Harbor Hospice. Pat requested no formal service, and in lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Aransas/San Patricio County Master Gardeners Association Rockport Texas, Gulf Point Village Rockport Texas (activity program) and First Presbyterian Church Rockport Texas.
