Mary Lee Annelle Bell passed away on December 20, 2020 after suffering a series of strokes. She was 94 years old. Mary was born in Taft, Texas on November 25, 1926 to Julia Rosalee Ondrusek (née Vavrusa) and John Joseph Ondrusek. She graduated high school in Taft, Texas. Upon graduation from the University of Houston and St. Joseph’s Infirmary in 1948 she began her career as a Registered Nurse.
She worked four years at Spohn Hospital (now Spohn Shoreline) Corpus Christi, Texas as Night Supervisor and Day Floor Head Nurse. Later she worked as the Office Nurse for Dr. Joe Sloan, Pediatrician. When that office closed four years later, she moved to Ewing Memorial Hospital (later Clinic) in Sinton, Texas as Head Nurse for seven years. The final eight years of her career were spent at Retama Manor (later Shoreline Healthcare Center) in Taft, Texas as Director of Nursing.
She married William Henry Bell, Jr., also of Taft, Texas in 1957. She facilitated frequent moves necessary during his career, and was a kind and industrious homemaker and mother. Mary retired from nursing administration in 1983. She was the primary caregiver for her husband (a WWII combat veteran) for the last 15 years of his life. She enjoyed bird watching, puzzles, and helping her neighbors. Mary resided at Clare Creek Senior Living in Pflugerville, Texas during her last seven years. She continued her nursing vocation by assisting caregivers and other residents at Clare Creek until Alzheimer’s Disease overcame her.
Mary’s parents and two brothers Marvin John Ondrusek and Dennis Roy Ondrusek predeceased her. Mary is survived by a son and daughter-in-law in Austin, Texas.
Private family burial will be at Seaside Memorial Park.
