Mary Dorothea Williams Hazard passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at her home.
Arriving in this world on September 9, 1938, Mary was born in Dearborn, Michigan. She was the seventh of Robert and Lucy Williams’ eight children. After a brief stint in Florida, she moved with her parents to Angleton, Texas when she was a teenager.
Mary was an excellent student at Angleton high, but her true love was the stage. She played the role of Laurie in “Oklahoma,” and won a state award for her performance. She also loved singing with the choir at her church, First Methodist of Angleton. Her participation in the Young Methodist Youth Fellowship would lead her to the man who became the love of her life, John Hazard.
Mary and John married in 1954 and their amazing love affair lasted until John’s death in October of 2018. In the early years of their marriage, Mary continued to participate in local theater, but the birth of their first child, Robin, curtailed her acting career. Two more children, Roger and Tracy, eventually arrived, but nothing stopped her from participating in the church choir.
Mary was a loving wife. She adored her “Johnny” and wanted nothing more than to provide a comfortable home and a delicious meal for him. Mary always put her marriage first, and the love and adoration Mary and John shared taught their children how strong a relationship could be.
Over the years, Mary volunteered as a candy striper and passionately pursued a number of sports. She was a skilled ice skater and enjoyed swimming, fishing, golf, and boating. In addition, she and John were excellent dancers and voracious readers.
In 1988 Mary became a grandmother, a role which she entered with poise and grace. She asked her two grandchildren, Kate and Will, to call her “Grand Mere”--a name fitting her elegance and larger-than-life personality. She was a very loving grandmother. Kate and Will share many memories of her comforting food, her sometimes naughty impersonations, and her jokes (“no corn tortillas?!”). They miss her dearly.
Everyone loved Mary. Literally. In addition to being a fabulous cook and host, she entertained family and friends alike with her quirky sense of humor and droll puns. It didn’t hurt that she was also drop-dead gorgeous.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband John, as well as her sisters Gloria, Patricia and Roberta and infant brother Robert Cecil. She is survived by her three brothers Charles, Roger and Lynn Williams, children, Robin Hazard of Rockport, Roger Hazard and husband Chris of Omaha, NE, and Tracy Hazard Allen and husband Jim of Charlotte, NC, and two grandchildren, Will Allen of Portland, OR and Kate Allen of Philadelphia, PA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made by donation to Rockport Center for the Arts or the Humane Society & Adoption Center of Rockport-Fulton.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
