Loy Adeline Spears Kellar, 91, passed away on June 1, 2023 with her family at her side. She was born in Aransas Pass, TX on October 26, 1931 to W. N. Spears, Sr. and Edna Gleghorn Spears, delivered by Dr. Walter Noble. She graduated from Aransas Pass High School in 1949 and married her high school sweetheart, Doil Plezz Kellar, Sr., in 1950. She was a proud employee of Aransas Pass ISD for 37 years and served as the school secretary at Kieberger Elementary until her retirement in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Doil, and eleven brothers and sisters: Leslie Spears, Frankie Spears, Thelda Spears, Walter Spears, Edward Spears, W. N. “Bubbie” Spears, Jr., Wanda Spears Morrison, Vivian “V. J.” Spears, Floyd “Jiggs” Spears, Florence Spears Parks and Rosemary Spears Upton. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Loeffler and husband, Bob of San Antonio, son, Doil Plezz “Bubba” Kellar, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Aransas Pass and brother, Robert “Joe” Spears, of Aransas Pass. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Leslye Campbell and husband, Neil of San Antonio, and Lyssa Hamilton and husband, Michael of Boerne, great-grandchildren Reese, Rebecca and Reagan Campbell, Zane, Brek and Saylor Hamilton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Loy was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church Aransas Pass and spent her life serving the church and its youth. She was a Sunday school teacher, a Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) leader, and served many years as the Sunday school program superintendent.
She was an active member of the Aransas Pass High School Athletic Booster Club and received the Murl Smith Award for her volunteer work with the youth of Aransas Pass. For many years, she sat beside Doil in the press box and served as his “spotter” while he announced Panther football games. Together, she and Doil were honored as members of the first class of inductees into the Aransas Pass High School Hall of Fame in 2003.
She and Doil were named Citizens of the Year by the Aransas Pass Chamber of Commerce in 1994, and they were named Outstanding Citizens of the Community by the Aransas Pass Women’s Club in 2001.
Visitation will be held at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at First United Methodist Church Aransas Pass on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 10:00 a.m with Rev. Scott Patton officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie View Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Neil Campbell, Reese Campbell, Reagan Campbell, Michael Hamilton, Zane Hamilton and Brek Hamilton.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Aransas Pass and the Aransas Pass Athletic Booster Club.
