Lois Ann Harrington, who brought joy to her family, friends and students, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019, at Gulf Point Plaza in Rockport. She was 88.
Born on Jan. 17, 1931, and growing up in Miami, Fla., the daughter of Matthew Mardi Brock and Kletha Marie Kreuter Brock, Lois met Richard Harrington in Knox, Ind. on a family vacation as a child without knowing the two would one day meet again, fall in love and start a family.
Lois graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Florida (remaining a Gator fan throughout her life) and married Richard, who joined the United States Navy at the end of the Korean War. The two eventually settled down in California then West Virginia, until Dick, then a chemical engineer, took a job and moved the family to Texas. While raising three children, Lois taught up and down the Texas coastline, following Dick as he navigated from engineering project to engineering project, from Brownsville to Dickinson, before finishing her distinguished teaching career with the Aransas County Independent School District. Lois spent her career teaching reading, finishing at Rockport-Fulton Junior High School. After retirement, Lois was involved in establishing the Fulton Mansion as a State Historical site.
After retiring from teaching, Lois and Dick became avid sailors and traveled the world while connecting with family members from around the country. During their travels, they went on epic adventures to Central and South America, Hawaii and Mexico. Lois even traveled to Italy by herself in her later years. When she wasn't traveling or sailing, Lois cherished her time with her grandchildren: Matthew, James, Joseph Brock, Rebecca, Patrick and Jenny Marie.
Lois was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rockport, the Rockport Sailing Club and a long-time member of Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Her many hobbies included collecting and persevering family heirlooms and bird watching. Lois was a lover of all animals and enjoyed adopting, providing and caring for pets in need of a loving home.
She is preceded in death by her husband and her oldest child, Kletha Marie Harrington. She is survived by her two sons, James Markland (Leasa) Harrington and Joseph Brock (Diana) Harrington as well as her six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
