Laurel Diane Varnon, age 73, of Rockport, Texas passed away Monday morning, December 9, 2019. She was born in Marysville, CA to Robert and Reba Nase. Laurel was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Nase, and is survived by her husband, Charlie Varnon of Rockport; daughter, Shannon Parong of Virginia; two grandsons, Charlie and Peter Parong; and sister, Phyllis Hall of California.
Laurel led a full and interesting life as a probation officer in California, a consultant who worked to improve the correctional system, and then finally an elementary teacher. She and her family moved to Rockport in 1993 after her husband retired. Laurel continued to teach in the Rockport school system for 10 years, where she made a huge impact both inside and outside the classroom with her energy, love of learning, and compassion. After retirement, Laurel became a staple in the line dancing and mahjong communities, and her infectious smile and laugh will be missed by many.
Everyone who walked through Laurel's door immediately felt cared for and loved. She was a mom to many, even those who briefly knew her. Laurel was an amazing wife, mother, and Nana, and her family was incredibly lucky to have her for the time they were given.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Rockport, TX. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at 10:00am.
