Larry Joe Kerr
Larry Joe Kerr passed away Monday April 15th 2019, very peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Deb Kerr of two years. They were married in Springfield Colorado, in November of 2017. She brought with her, three children and a grandchild into the relationship. Larry is lovingly missed and remembered by his brother Leon and his wife Lida Kerr, his two daughters, Elissa Forgey and Amanda Gladden and their spouses, as well as two grandchildren Connor and Maddison Forgey.
Larry was born in Lamar, Colorado on February 17, 1948 to Harvey Louis and Nannie Sue Kerr. He lost his parents seven months apart at age thirteen, at which point Leon and Lida became his guardians and raised him. He did not graduate from high school but instead found himself enlisted in the army after an impromptu trip to California at age 17, in 1965. He later completed his GED and received a high school diploma from Walsh High School while serving. He planned to start out as air support, jumped into infantry, then found himself a door gunner, and finally became an Aviation Technician. He honorably served in Vietnam as an infantryman and door gunner from 1967 to 1969. He returned home to Walsh but ended up leaving again to pursue his career in the Army, choosing to train as a turbine engine specialist. Working his way up in the ranks, he oversaw the Mannheim Depot at Coleman Barracks from 1982 to 1985. It was during this time, that he met his first wife and mother to his children Kathleen (Kaye) Kerr. On February 28, 1987, he retired from the US Army, having served 20 years and 7 months, and the rank of Sergeant First Class.
Later in 1987, Larry enrolled at Pikes Peak Community College and completed a certification course in HVAC. Together with his wife, they opened Kerr's Heating, A/C, And Refrigeration, which was his pride and joy for many years.
Larry enjoyed hunting, woodworking, camping, good music, and greatest of all, an ice cold beer while fishing in his boat. He was known for his kindness, willingness to always help others in need, his love of life itself and most of all, his boisterous joyful laugh.
There will be a graveside memorial service at the Walsh, Colorado Cemetery in on May 18, 2019 at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Freedom Service Dogs of America. Freedom Service Dogs of America provides service dogs to veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD, while also giving shelter dogs a purpose and a home. Larry had a love of dogs and heart for veterans suffering from PTSD. Having suffered from PTSD himself, he recognized the importance of reintegration and rehabilitation programs for veterans. https://freedomservicedogs.org/
