Katey Masterson was born Kathryn Lou Thurston in Lawrence, Kansas on August 24, 1925 to Warren and Ida Lou Thurston.

The family moved to Missouri and lived in Sedalia and in and near Warrensburg, Mo. for the rest of her formative years. She was raised in the First Christian Church in Warrensburg. One of her favorite memories was working at the local drug store after school. Katey graduated from Warrensburg High in 1943. Katey attended Central Missouri State University for 2 years and then studied at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English from the school of Journalism. While at the "J" school at "MU" Katey met a young Texan back from WWII. Kirby Masterson and Katey were married at the Warrensburg First Christian Church after their graduation from the University of Missouri on November 26, 1948. Katey and Kirby moved to Paris, France after working in a canning factory in Illinois to pay for a trip to Europe on the Queen Mary Liner. Katey worked for military agencies while in France and Germany for the following 5 years and the couple was blessed with 3 children Roger, Mary, and Mark. While in Paris, the family joined the Episcopal Church in Paris and Katey was an active Episcopalian for the rest of her life. In 1954 they returned to the US and lived in St. Louis, Mo. for 4 years. In 1958 they moved to Westchester County, NY where they stayed until 1966. Sara (1959), Bruce (1961) and Dale (1965) were additional blessings to the family. Katey worked for The Patent Trader newspaper among other assignments. In 1966 the Mastersons moved to Richardson, TX to be near Kirby's mother and Katey's brother "Spud". The 3 oldest children graduated from high school in Dallas and Kirby taught French and Katey worked as a technical editor for Texas Instruments, LTV Aerospace, and Collins Radio. She also worked as an Office Manager for The Aces, World Champion Bridge Team, where she was able to feed her life long passion for the game of Bridge by sitting in when the team needed a fourth!

In 1971 the Mastersons moved again, this time to Cincinnati, OH. Katey worked as an editor for Southwest Publishing Co. In 1975 the Mastersons moved to Vero Beach, Fla. Kirby was teaching French and Spanish and Katey edited the in-house magazine for Piper Cub Aircraft, and Managed Southeastern Printing Co. in Stuart, FL. In 1982, Katey went to work for the State of Florida and eventually became supervisor over 5 counties of nursing homes in Florida at her retirement from the state in 1992. After becoming a Social Worker for the State of Florida, Katey earned a Master's Degree in Social Work in 1992 and became a Licensed Social Worker in the State of Florida and worked with other professionals and had her own practice.
Katey and Kirby retired to Aransas Pass, TX in early 2000 to be near their adult children and grandchildren.

She is remembered deep in our hearts as being loving, kind, considerate, patient, intelligent, and forgiving. She was a mountain of strength and consistency. She was a woman of deep living faith and a blessing to God's kingdom and all who knew her.

Katey was preceded in death by her husband, Kirby Masterson, her parents, her brother, Elmer Dale Thurston, and her grandson, Aaron Masterson. Katey is survived by her children, Roger Masterson (Jay), Mary Liddle (Larry), Mark Masterson (Karen), Sara Williams (Jeff), Bruce Masterson (Theo), and Dale Eshleman (Jamie). her grandchildren; Jessica, Kristin, Jamie, Casey, Amanda and Mary Grace; her great grandchildren; Sara Katey, Rabecca, Emmet, Mark, Lena, Zachery, Elwood, Kira, Quinn, Xander, William, James Allen, Ian, and Sterling.

Daughter, friend, wife, mom.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Episcopal Church of our Savior in Aransas Pass, Texas. Burial will be private.
