Jose Angel “Buckwheat” Moreno Sr., 76, of Aransas Pass Texas, passed away on March 24, 2023, surrounded by his family. Jose was born October 18, 1946 in Chihuahua, Mexico to Pedro Moreno and Argentina Reyes.
Jose or as his family and friends knew him as “Buckwheat or Joe,” was a shrimp boat Captain for the majority of his life. He started working on shrimp boats at a young age. The best memory he had of being a shrimper was to see his wife and children wait at the flats to wave him goodbye and to welcome him home. He worked tirelessly on his shrimp boat to provide for his family. He would regularly bring pounds of shrimp and fish to be shared with all his family and friends. We all knew there was going to be a shrimp and fish fry, when he returned after being 30+ days out on the gulf. When he was not on a boat, he spent his time building small model shrimp boats to be displayed at home. After he retired from the shrimping industry in 2002, he worked maintenance for the Sandpiper Condominiums and then later worked at Walmart for 17 years. Joe enjoyed going to work where he made numerous friends. He relished having a conversation with anyone he met. Joe’s plan was to return to work after he recovered from health issues.
It was when Buck moved to Aransas Pass where he met a beautiful lady he would marry, Dianna. Buck loved his wife affectionally with all one’s heart and they are now reunited together in heaven. He doubtlessly had a bouquet of a dozen of roses for his wife, when she welcomed him home.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years Dianna “Nonnie” Moreno; daughter, Rebecca Garcia; grandson, Christian Hutchins; great-granddaughter, Aria Lyles; nephew, Jose “Pelingo” Lamas; sister, Dora Galvan; great-nephew Angel Arismendez; brothers, Pedro “Pete” Moreno, Cassimiro Lamas, Ramiro Moreno, Jesse Moreno; stepfather, Eusebio Lamas; mother, Argentina Reyes.
