Joan Hill

Joan Winterbauer Hill, 90, of Portland, Texas passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, after a lengthy illness. She was born on October 30, 1932, in Dallas, Texas to Clyde Sr and May Winterbauer. Joan attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, graduating with the class of 1951. She and her family were members of East Grand Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas. Joan is survived by her husband of 46 years, Earl Hill; children Douglas Cook, Susan (George) Chabot, Sheri (Miles) Brown, Susie (Robert) Moon, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Those who greet her in Heaven are her parents, Clyde Sr and May Winterbauer, Brother, Clyde Winterbauer Jr. and wife, Juanita; Sisters, Vivian Brown and husband Henry Owens; Margie Zuber and husband, Travis; Aunts and Uncles, Hazel and Gordon Winterbauer, Agnes and Leon Woods, Vera and Leroy Cole, Lewis and Gladys McCarley.

Her hobbies included working puzzles of any kind, to include jigsaw, word searches and crosswords and her family never found one that stumped her. She enjoyed playing the piano and whistling, both of which she did beautifully. She enjoyed growing cacti, an interest she acquired while living in West Texas. Joan loved her pet cats of which there were many over the years. Her life-long interest in learning was shown when she owned an entire set of encyclopedias and read every single one of them. She always looked forward to trips to Dallas to visit with family including many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly. Joan was the proud daughter of a Dallas Firefighter who, as the Engineer, drove the last horse-drawn steam pumper Old Tige on its final fire run in 1921. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dallas Firefighters Museum where Old Tige is housed, 3801 Parry Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75226 or to a no-kill animal shelter of your choice. Burial will be private at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. A memorial service will be held in Dallas at a later date.
