Jacqueline Ruth "Johnston" Johnston, 89, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, in Rockport, Texas. Born on February 14, 1936, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Jacqueline lived a vibrant and impactful life marked by creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit. Known affectionately as Jackie, she was a trailblazer in business and a dynamic presence in every community she touched. Over the years, she founded and operated several businesses across Corpus Christi and Austin. Her ventures included Jill's Value Shop, Jacqueline Boutique, John's Mom's Restaurant, as well as bookstores and antique furniture stores. Each endeavor reflected her innovative mind and fearless approach to life—qualities that made her stand out as a woman ahead of her time. In addition, Jackie brought to her many endeavors amazing artistic and musical talents. Jackie’s faith was an important part of her journey. In the year 2000, she converted to Catholicism and embraced her belief in God and Christ with deep conviction. Her spiritual path brought her strength and peace throughout the later years of her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: John T. Cypert; Cindy Cypert Ellis Robinson and her husband Matt; Jill Cypert Sochacki Powers; and Lauren Johnston. She also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Tagert Ellis and his wife Kat, James Cypert and his wife Natasha; and Marcello Sochacki. Jackie is also survived by her brothers Gary Johnston and his wife Constance Drew; James K. Johnston and his wife Emma; sister Kathleen Garrett Howden and her husband Steven. She was preceded in death by her father Jack Elmore Johnston, and mother Nellie Ruth, Garrett; step-mother Christal C. Johnston, step-father Gavan W. Garrett; brothers, Marshall W. Johnston and John M. Garrett, and sons-in-law David R. Ellis and James Powers; and the two loves of her life, husbands James T. Cypert and Leslie Bruce Mabrey.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Rockport Nursing and Rehabilitation and Harbor Hospice Care for their compassionate care during Jackie’s final days.
The family plans for a memorial service to be held in early Fall. May Jacqueline’s memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire all who remember her remarkable life.
