Harvey Evans

December 31, 1925 — October 30, 2020

Portland

On October 30, 2020, Harvey M. Evans, of Portland, Texas peacefully passed away at the age of 94 after a lengthy illness.  Harvey will be missed by his very close family and friends.

Harvey was born December 31, 1925, in Houston, Texas to Eugene and Margaret Evans.  He spent most of his formative years in Houston.  He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School, 1943.  Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served his country during World War II in the Asia-Pacific theater aboard the USS SAN DIEGO.   Upon completion of his naval duties, he returned to Houston, Texas in 1946 to marry his best friend and love of his life, Barbara Beatty.  Following their December 1946 wedding, Harvey attended University of Houston and graduated in 1949.   Harvey and Barbara shared sixty-six blissful years together.  They traveled the world during his career with Nabisco and lived in some interesting locations.  His transfer with Nabisco in 1961 was to Portland, Texas.  Harvey and Barbara happily settled in Portland and made many close friends over the years.

Harvey had many hobbies.  He was an avid duck hunter and also loved pheasant and dove hunting….but duck hunting was his pride and joy.  He enjoyed his air boat and offshore fishing.  Harvey’s second love was training Labrador Retrievers. He was a charter member of the Lone Star Retriever Club of Texas.  Harvey and Barbara spent their weekends attending field trials with their labs who won many first-place trophies.  Harvey was always proud to display the prize trophies and tell you a long, interesting story about all of their field trials. After he could no longer be active in hunting, he loved to sit on his driveway in the cool of the evening and spread out corn and bird feed to all of the birds in Portland, Texas.  At 5:00pm, they all tend to swarm to Harvey’s driveway for a few hours. Harvey could tell you the species of each of the birds and their characteristics.  He never met a bird that he didn’t know…!! Harvey was a kind and gracious man who had a heart for helping others and making long-lasting friendships.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents in 1961 and 1987, respectively and by his dear Barbara in 2011.  He is survived by his loving Labrador Retriever, Bud; two loving nieces:  Sandra McAdams and husband, George; Connie Guidry and one great niece, Lori Guidry.  Also surviving Harvey are many loving nieces and nephews who mourn his passing.

Harvey’s family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of Harvey’s dear friends who visited him and another heartfelt thank you for all of his wonderful care from the AAdi Home Health & Hospice Care Team and his loving and caring providers from Anthem Home Care. Thank you for your kindness and words of comfort to Harvey during his illness.

“Old Friend”

By Edgar Guest

“When we have lived our little lives and wandered all their byways through,
When we’ve seen all that we shall see and finished all that we must do,
When we shall take one backward look off yonder where our journey ends,
I pray that you shall be as glad as I shall be that we were friends.
