OBITUARY FOR GENE L. FELKNER
Gene LeGrand Felkner was born on June 13, 1935, in Gregory, Texas to George and Dora McHugh Felkner. Gene was the oldest of four children.
Gene went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 7, 2024, in Portland, Texas.
Gene grew up in San Antonio, Texas but spent many weekends and summers in Fulton, Texas, where his family’s homestead stood for over 100 years. He considered Rockport/Fulton his “home” and spent his last years very happily living in Rockport with his sister Donna.
As a young man, Gene enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, and racing his ’57 Chevy. He was very mechanically minded and worked his career repairing machines and installing computer systems in restaurants. He lived in Kansas City for 25 years where he raised his family and discovered his love for teaching.
Gene put this talent to work in the Boy Scout organization and was a Cub Scout Pack Leader as well as a Boy Scout Master for many years. This work led him to the position of District Leadership Training. Gene was given the “Lamb Award”. This award is the highest honor bestowed on Boy Scout leaders by the Lutheran Church he belonged to at the time.
Gene enjoyed photography in his middle years. He built a dark room in his home basement and developed and printed his own film. His love for photography was still prevalent in his later years as his always had his camera as he traveled around Rockport.
One thing that has been consistent throughout his whole life has been his love for the Lord. Gene loved studying and learning about the Bible and teaching its stories. Gene took mission trips to Africa and Peru and developed a reputation as a wonderful storyteller. He especially loved telling the story of how Jesus died on the cross for us all, to save us from our sins.
Gene was always very active in the churches he belonged to throughout his life. He taught Sunday School, worked in Vacation Bible School, and substituted teaching adult classes. He belonged to the Kiwanis and won the “Member of the Year” award in Atlanta for his work. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and worked as a mentor to young adults here in Rockport.
Gene is survived by his two children, Gary Felkner and wife Jennifer of Leawood, Kansas, and his daughter Terri Canfield and husband Charles of Milliken, Colorado, and five granddaughters, Lilly, Emily, Rachel, Allison, and Veronica and his sister Donna Dickinson of Rockport and four nephews.
