Florance Melissa Sharkey
Melissa Sharkey died May 10, 2021, at her home in Rockport, Texas, from natural causes. She has entered the peace that passeth all understanding, eternal life with Jesus Christ. Melissa was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, where she was graduated from Leon High School and the Florida State University earning an undergraduate degree in Political Science. Beginning her professional career as a legislative aide to the former State Representative Ted Ewing of Venice, Florida, she later became a dynamic force in multiple non-profit organizations. Melissa’s ability to bring together corporate and public resources to create partnerships for positive change benefitted numerous community organizations in several states. She was the Dallas Executive Director for Texas War on Drugs Campaign, Director of the National Kidney Foundation in Florida, and Director of the Methodist Hospital Foundation in Jacksonville, Florida, and an active member of the Junior League of Dallas, Texas.
Melissa was a believer. She grew up attending St. John’s Episcopal Church and later served as a Sunday school teacher, volunteer for numerous Christian outreach programs and missions, and member of New Life International Outreach Church in Tallahassee.
Melissa was preceded in death by her mother, Jackie G. Sharkey, her father Murray J. Sharkey, and her brother John (Jack) Sharkey. She is survived by her three siblings: Sheila Melton (Chip), Patricia Garner (Greg) and Thomas Sharkey, two nieces Amanda Melton Long (Will) and Meghan Melton Wilson (Justin) and two great nieces Jolene Wilson and Sawyer Long, and great nephew Wiley Long.
A private graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery. Bevis Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.
