Spring came early when Elizabeth Cornelia Jones Moers was born in Spokane, Washington on March 20, 1937, to Dr. Archie Neff Jones and Rosalie Cartier Jones. “Betsy” came into this world one day before the official start of Spring that year and she continued to personify the very essence of springtime for the next 88 years.
Betsy grew up the middle of three children in a home filled with music and music lovers, which placed her on a path that led directly to the band hall at Sam Houston State University, where she met the man that would be by her side for the rest of her life.
Betsy married Allen Ray Moers on June 1, 1957, and settled in Wharton, Texas. In the two decades that followed, Betsy became the mother of three, a teacher’s aide and an active member of the community. She did it all: the chaperoning, the sleepovers, the birthday parties, the Band Boosters, the church choir, the fundraisers, the band camps, the football games, the Mardi Gras parades, the Girl Scout cookies … all the things. And she was always the “fun one” in everything that she did.
In 1979, Betsy and Allen Ray moved to Rockport for their next adventure. As co-owner of the Surf Court Motel, Betsy managed the cleaning crew (she cleaned rooms), the linen supplies (she washed towels), coordinated routine maintenance (she painted, cleaned the pool and mowed the lawn) and provided entertainment (who can forget 4:00 coffeetime?). She was usually the first face guests saw when they checked in and the last face they saw when they turned in their keys. She organized activities for the Winter Texans and kept in touch with dozens of repeat customers over the years.
During this chapter of her life, Betsy remained active in the church choir, handbell choir and a wonderful sextet called the Sweet Six. She even donned a clown costume for parades and other functions. There was no end to the fun she brought! She also managed to find time to become a grandmother and great-grandmother and was well-known for her handmade greeting cards that showed up in the mail with a five-dollar bill tucked inside. She loved celebrating pretty much everything.
When retirement finally came for Betsy, it just freed up more time for her greeting card production, sunset golf cart rides and turtle feeding with the grandkids and great grandkids.
Betsy quietly slipped away in the early morning hours of March 20, 2025, her 88th birthday. She leaves behind her husband, Allen Ray Moers, daughter Ele Jordan (Mason), son Jack (Julie), son Michael (Christine), and brother Archie (Beth). Grandchildren Preston, Billy, Jacob, Jessica, Jenna, Sadrack, Theo, Andrew, Marah, Precious, and great grandchildren Nick, Adam, Thomas, Sam and Keira are also left with an empty place in their hearts. Betsy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Bunny.
Her family knows with certainty that Heaven is brighter today with the addition of Betsy, and that we will all rejoice when we see her again.
But when you do see her again, please don’t mention that you now know her middle name … she’d probably deny it anyway.
