Donovan Bates

Donovan “ Donnie” Bates, 81, of Rockport passed away at his home on Saturday, May 4, 2019. He was born on May 1, 1938 in Amarillo, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Horace and Gertrude Bates; siblings, Gertrude Bates, Gene Bates, Jay Bates, Deverne Weston, Bonnie Troy, Bo Bates, Richard Bates. Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Doris Bates; sisters-in-law, Carol Bates and Juanita Bates; step-sons, Jimmy Currey and Lance Currey; 6 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Donnie was born and raised in Amarillo and relocated to Rockport in 2003, graduated from Amarillo High in 1956, served in the National Guard from 1956 – 1961, he attended West Texas State University and retired from the Amarillo United States Postal Service after 32 years. Fishing, golfing, traveling, camping and family were the biggest parts of his life. He enjoyed spending time with those closest to him. Donnie will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held by family and friends in Rockport, Texas. Service dates and times will be announced at a later date.
