David Phillips

David Marion Phillips, 83, of Portland, TX went to be with the Lord on December 8, 2017. David was born in Wharton, TX on August 9, 1934, and was raised with his siblings in Houston, TX during WW II. The family moved to Aransas Pass, TX in 1949, and he graduated in 1952 from Aransas Pass High School where he played on the Panther football team, served as Class President, and was voted "Most Handsome" of his senior class. He attended Texas A&M University for a couple of years before enlisting in the United States Air Force Cadet Program during the Korean War. After his enlistment, he then attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX and married Barbara Ann Tamburin on September 7, 1957 at the First United Methodist Church in Ingleside, TX. They moved to Brownsville, TX where he was employed by Dubose Marine Radio as an Electronic Technician, and during that time he was granted a patent for a CB radio that was utilized in countries all over the world. After 20 years, the family moved to Portland, TX in 1977 and he was employed with Gulf Marine Radio before he opened his own business, Aransas Radio. (Where everyone knew him as "Dave the Radio Man.") David had many hobbies and interests including stock car and motorcycle races in his youth, was a HAM radio operator, amateur photographer and astronomer, and also earned his pilot's license and flew his beloved Piper Cherokee and Mooney airplanes. He had a brilliant mechanical and engineering mind, and could build or fix anything. He also loved the outdoors and camping, and always looked forward to the yearly family vacation to the National Parks of the Southwestern and Western United States.

David is preceded in death by his parents David M. Phillips and Dorothy Berry Phillips. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Tamburin Phillips and his children; Cheryl Monteith (Walter) of Houston, TX; David M. Phillips, Jr. of Timberon, NM; Deborah Pittman (Jeffrey) of Brenham, TX; and grandsons; Stuart and Colin Monteith. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Madelyn) Phillips and his sister Sharon Phillips both of Aransas Pass, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Ingleside, TX.

There will not be a graveside service, so refreshments will be served following the memorial in the Fellowship Hall.
