Rockport, Texas
David Charles Perkins of Rockport, TX, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018, peacefully at home in the company of his wife of more than 54 years. He was born in Beeville, TX on November 26, 1940. During his early days, the family moved frequently in order for his father to work in the oil fields of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. They eventually settled in Rockport in 1949 and David knew that he had found his home. He left high school to join the Navy and served honorably for 3 years earning an early discharge in order to pursue a college degree. He attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics and Mathematics. His biggest success at university however was the convincing of Sofie A. Zdansky of Corpus Christi to spend their lives together. They were married on December 28th, 1963.
His first job after college was as a geophysical engineer for Mobile Oil in North Texas and Dallas. He soon discovered, however, that his true passion was for teaching. He moved his young family back to South Texas and taught at Corpus Christi King High School. After a few years, he decided to pursue a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Texas while teaching at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) in San Marcos, TX. In 1971, he moved the family back to Rockport, TX, where he remained for the rest of his life. He taught at Rockport-Fulton High School for 2 years before attending Law School at Texas Tech University and St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He, then, taught at Aransas Pass High School where he became interested in Computer Science while teaching his students the basic concepts. He pursued and obtained his second Master's Degree in Computer Science at Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M CC) and joined the faculty after graduation. He taught there for 18 years, retiring in 1996.
He spent his retirement doing various volunteer work and becoming very involved in activities at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockport. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and Cantor as well as serving on the advisory boards of the Sacred Heart School and the Diocese of Corpus Christi. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, KJT and KJZT fraternal groups, and the Guadalupanos.
David was a very devoted family man and member of the Church. He possessed a vast curiosity about many things outside of his main interests. He loved reading, singing, traveling, cooking, and solving puzzles.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Cloma Perkins of Rockport, his son Don Perkins of Little Rock, AR and a baby brother. He is survived by his wife Sofie Perkins of Rockport, his son David Perkins (Savannah) and three step-grandsons of Rio Rancho, NM, his sister Ila Domaschk (Gene) of Rockport and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 9pm with rosary to be recited at 7pm on Friday, July 6th at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Aransas Pass, TX. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockport, TX. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Rockport Cemetery.
