Christina Dee Matheny, was born on February 28th, 1984 in Homestead, Florida to Debra and Rodney Matheny.
At birth, Christina’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Her parents were told their child did not make it. But through loving parents’ urgent prayers, Christina took a breath, proving one of many times to come, to be a miracle. When Christina was five, her family moved from Florida, to San Antonio, Texas. From there, the family moved to Rockport,TX where she remained with her parents, under their constant care.
While the damage at birth caused Christina to live her life as a special needs child, she was special in more ways than just the diagnosis. Christina, nicknamed Nina by her family, was known to loudly sing. Nina loved when her Mom would play worship music throughout the house. She enjoyed the brightly painted room that was kept bright for her, with sweet stickers aligning the walls. Her favorite toys were musical instruments, or the beaded mazes. Her parents would buy her big mazes to play with on the floor, and small mazes to carry with her to appointments. She also loved baskets, and loved to play with baskets by putting them on her head. Nina enjoyed watching her Dad play video games, and would scoot herself to the screen. She recognized the people she cherished, and would grab them into the biggest hugs while singing. Sometimes tugging a little too hard on their hair, or trying to snag their keys. Nina was almost always happy. An innocent pure child. Deeply loved.
On March 30th, 2020, Christina went to be with Jesus. Absent in body is to be immediately present with the Lord, in her perfect body with no pain, ills or struggles. There is a peace in knowing she is singing and running through fields of Glory in an eternal bliss. Nina, through her life, showed her family through many lessons of perseverance. Many lessons of faith. At her young age, Nina taught anyone who knew her empathy, unconditional kindness, and unconditional love. Nina taught us all to be better people. And she leaves this world reminding us not to lose hope during chaos.
