Chris Lamar Johnson, born on July 5, 1948, to Herman C. and Corine (Davis) Johnson, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024 at the age of 75. Chris was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values instilled by his loving parents.

Throughout his life, Chris exemplified kindness, generosity, and a great sense of humor and fun. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his unwavering support for those he loved, and his ability to find joy in the simple things in life. Chris's legacy is one of love and dedication, qualities that touched the lives of all who knew him.

Chris served honorably in the Air Force for four years, rising to the rank of sergeant, after graduating in 1974 from Southwest Texas State University. He returned to his home in Rockport and enjoyed employment with the Department of Agriculture and later with the City of Rockport as a code inspector until retirement. He moved to Portland, Texas, where he enjoyed fostering and caring for many dogs that he loved dearly, including black and brown Labrador Retrievers.

Chris used his base of operations in South Texas to indulge his passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and bird hunter, primarily doves but also quail and spring turkey. On several occasions he enjoyed dove hunting in Cordoba, Argentina. His travels were not limited to hunting; he enjoyed a trip with family to the area of Provence in France, winding up the trip in Paris before returning home.

Chris is survived by Thomas Richard Farnsworth, who he reared from childhood, and his loving sister and brother-in-law, Betty and John T. Cabaniss. He will be missed by his nieces, Katherine Parsley (Brian), Elizabeth McHugh (Jeff), Sunni Larsen (Chris), and Shay Lewis (John), and their children, Mason and Matthew McHugh, Caleb and Cameran Larsen, and Tyler and Summer Lewis. They will all continue to honor his memory and carry forward his spirit. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother, Curtis R. Johnson.

Many thanks to the team at Gulf Coast Harbor Hospice in Portland, Texas, and in particular to his skilled and caring caregivers, especially Robin Arzola, RN, and Angela Austin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gulf Coast Harbor Hospice in Chris's honor.

He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of his family and friends. A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Rockport Cemetery to celebrate Chris's life and bid him a heartfelt farewell. Rest in peace, Chris Lamar Johnson. Your life was a blessing, and your memory will be a treasure.
