Bruce Monte Shugart (1936-2024)
Ingleside and Rockport resident, 87 year-old Bruce Monte Shugart, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, after a long-term illness. Bruce lead a full life of work, fishing, hunting, restoring vintage cars, and spending time with his family.
Mr. Shugart was born in Atlanta, GA, on September 14, 1936, to Wilda May Smith (1918-1991), who remained devoted to him and his siblings her entire life. Mr. Shugart was preceded in death by his mother, his step-father Forrest William Shugart (1913-1977), his step-father Albert George Gaudry (1914-1979), his brother Gary Forrest Shugart (1938-1999), his sister Mary Gail Shugart McKinzie Brim (1938-1998), his sister Nona Michaela Shugart Gaudry Overton (1940-1993), his brother Louis Leon Gaudry (1954-1985), and his brother Stephen Lynn Gaudry (1946-2021).
Mr. Shugart is survived by his wife Sarah, his sister Marilyn Gaudry Hourican, his four sons, many grand children, nieces, and nephews.
Mr. Shugart spent his early years in Atlanta, GA, and Norfolk, VA. He and the Gaudry family settled in the Corpus Christi area in about 1948. Mr. Shugart met
the love of his life, Miss Sarah Jane Blackmon, at Roy Miller High School. Both graduated from Del Mar College. Mr. Shugart was a star football player at Corpus Christi High School, Del Mar College, and attended Texas A& I University on a football scholarship.
One of Mr. Shugart's favorite memories is traveling to Mexico City with Coach Gil Steinke and the Texas A&I University Javelina football team, for the first ever football game in the city's soccer arena. Mr. Shugart scored the first touchdown of the game. He vividly recalls the warm welcome given to him and his teammates.
The U.S. Army drafted Mr. Shugart while he attended Texas A&I and he served a tour of duty in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the 82nd Airborne Division. Afterward, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Bruce and Sarah married in 1958 and had four sons, Stacy Owen Shugart, Monte Clayton Shugart, Kacy Cole Shugart, and Shay Leigh Shugart, all of Ingleside. Mr. Shugart has served on the Ingleside Town Council and as Ingleside Mayor Pro-tem. He coached Little League Baseball in Ingleside for seventeen years. Mr. And Mrs. Shugart owned and
lived on a ranch in the Texas hill country for several years before settling in Rockport over 20 years ago.
Mr. Shugart was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had a passion for antique cars and collected many over the years. Mr. Shugart loved nature and wildlife of all types. He had pet javelinas, deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, lizards, dogs, cats and an alligator.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Charlie Marshall Funeral home in Aransas Pass. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Shugart at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, Rockport, TX 78382.
