Sue Cotham Jones, formerly of Rockport, Texas passed away peacefully after suffering a major stroke at the age of 92 on January 19, 2017. Sue was born January 13, 1925 in Iowa Park, Texas to John Grady and Irma Hunn Cotham. She grew up on various towns in north Texas where her father worked in the oil fields for the Texas Company (now Texaco). Their family often vacationed in Rockport as her dad was a fisherman as was her mother. Sue graduated from Valley View High School in Electra, Texas and the Nursing School at Harris Hospital (subsequently a school of TCU) in Fort Worth. After working as a flight attendant for American Airlines, she became a nurse at the Veterans Hospital in McKinney, Texas. It was there that she met and married her husband of 45 years: George Wendell Jones, M.D. who had grown up in Taft, Texas. They moved to San Antonio where they raised their family and lived for over thirty years. After retirement, they moved to Rockport and enjoyed life on Copano Bay where they gardened, fished, enjoyed bird-watching, their friends and life together. Sue and George were active at the Rockport United Methodist Church where for years she arranged flowers for worship services and faithfully volunteered at the Castaways thrift store. She served on the board of the Connie Hagar Bird Sanctuary and was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a kind and loving person; faithful to the end. She brought joy to so many and we will miss her greatly.
A service celebrating her life was held on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the Wesleyan at Estrella. Rev. Gary Whitbeck officiated the service, with daughter Beverly delivering the eulogy and Mrs. Nancy Wright and Ms. Julie Cowley providing the music.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband George, sister Doris Cotham Jones of St. Louis and nephew Wally Butler of Corpus Christi. Sue is survived by their children: Stephen Jones and his wife Stephanie of Bellingham, Washington; Keith Jones and his wife Jodie of Lakeside Village, Texas and Beverly Jones of Georgetown, Texas; grandchildren: Luke, Elaine, Alexis and Laurel; nieces and nephews: Mikal Drane, Maura McMillan, Bonnie Northcutt, Leana Turbeville, Glenda Detling, Justin Jones, Carolyn Trimble, Patricia Jones, Bruce Jones, Phyllis Burright, Richard Jones and Larry Jones.
