Abraham Herbert Sancher Jr, 78, of Lamar, TX and formerly of Woodmont, CT, passed away on August 4, after battling courageously with Parkinson’s Disease. Abe was born on September 10, 1945 in Ingleside, TX, the fourth of 12 children born to the late Abraham and Katherine Sanchez of Lamar, TX. He spent his childhood on the banks of Ingleside and farming in Lamar, the beach a constant backdrop to hard work, laughter, and shenanigans. He loved playing football in high school, a quarterback with the number 12 proudly emblazoned on his chest. After graduating from Aransas County High School, he moved to Stratford, CT to work at Sikorsky Aircraft. While there, he took a risk and went on a blind date with a cute, sassy blonde named Nina. He focused his efforts on winning her heart and they were married on April 25, 1968 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for time and all eternity. He served his country in Vietnam from 1970-1971. He received his Bachelors degree in Marine Biology from Texas A&M University, for whom he proudly cheered his entire life. He and Nina moved their little family to Milford, CT, where he further developed what would eventually become a successful career in international sales and marketing. His career took him and his growing family to England for a year, back to Milford, CT, and on trips all over the world, taking Nina with him whenever possible. His professional efforts were equally matched with those at home. He never lived in a home he didn’t renovate himself, having put countless hours into ensuring that his family lived well. After retirement, he helped build his dream house steps away from his old stomping grounds in Lamar, TX, where he happily lived the remainder of his days.
There wasn’t anything Abe couldn’t fix, a legacy he has proudly passed down. He was a stickler for safety, often standing on the seawall with hands on hips or a finger wagging in the air as we tore across the Long Island Sound in the boat. He didn’t shy away from a good and lengthy lecture, an invigorating nap, a generous bowl of vanilla ice cream, the weaving of a good literary yarn, or an opportunity to bring levity to serious situations, especially if it carried the added bonus of exasperating his wife. His hands could cook a mean steak and a delicious waffle as easily as they could complete a challenging repair. He always kept a prolific vegetable garden and did so until just a few years ago. His sense of humor was sharp and quick, right up until the week before his death. Being a grandpa brought him immeasurable joy these last several years. He was always ready and anxious for a visit or phone call, a snuggle, a chat, a nerf ball fight, a cartoon marathon, a project, a performance, a moment of nonsense, or to celebrate any accomplishment.
Abe was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and devoted most of his life to serving in many roles, his favorite being a teacher in Sunday School. He knew the Gospel of Jesus Christ well and was effective in sharing it with others in word and by example. He believed that in death, he would be reunited with his sweetheart Nina, whom he has greatly missed every minute of every day since she left.
Abe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nina, his sisters Susana Carpenter, Gloria Enderby, Oralia Valdez, and his in-laws, G. Roy and Olive Fugal.
Abe leaves behind his children Abe Sancher III (Kate Cassidy) NY, Sarah Droubay (Ryan) UT, Anne Sancher TX, Gretchen Sancher CT, Tim Sancher (Beth) MA, and Samantha Sancher CT. He leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Annie, Carson, and Rhett Droubay; Ava and Ella Sancher; and Willy and Abey Sancher. Many many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, extended family members, and friends also mourn his passing.
